Getting Started with Soulblight Gravelords

Lockdown has been hard on us gamers, as we have tried to find new and inventive ways to do what we enjoy. Now we are back, my mind feels refreshed to talk about some new armies that you can start Age of Sigmar with and where better to return to our articles than the latest re-addition to the Mortal Realms: Soulblight Gravelords.

Afflicted by the curse known as the Blood Kiss, the Soulblight Gravelords have finally entered the fray from their castles, keeps and domains. Fulfilling the bidding of Nagash's will, despite his timely demise in the wake of the Broken Realms, Vampire's, Monsters and other Undead denizens now march to expand their Dynasty's territories and keep the grasp of undeath firmly in their hands.

Soulblight Gravelords - The Core

Anyone will tell you, especially those that played in the world-that-was, Vampire's are Cool. So when Games Workshop said we were finally going to get the Soulblight Gravelords, I was eagerly awaiting what bloodsucking monstrosities and Deathrattling bones I could come up with. Luckily, I didn't need to wait long, as for the preorder this week, we have a Start Collecting! Soulblight Gravelords box we can start building our army with:

Leaders: Wight King on Skeletal Steed (General)

Battleline: Grave Guard x10

Other Units: Black Knights x5

Raising the Deathless Horde

This gives us a start to a Deathrattle inspired army, and by making the Wight King our General, our Grave Guard becomes one of our two mandatory Battleline. We are also provided with some fast cavalry in the form of Black Knights, to either quickly take objectives or sweep a flank. But this only makes up a single part of our army. Let's add a vampire and more skeletons to enhance our hero and battleline slots:

Soulblight Gravelords Leader: Vampire Lord

Battleline: Deathrattle Skeletons x20

That's now two thirds of our army completed, with the Deathrattle Skeletons becoming our larger Battleline unit to give us a nicely sized resummonable force to defend a pivotal objective. Our Vampire Lord on the other hand, offers some magical support to our Skeletal friends, as well as an unbinder against enemy spells. But we still have some points leftover to play with, so let's add something big and monstrous to round off our 1000 points.

Soulblight Gravelords Leader: Vengorian Lord

Now here is a powerhouse monster Vampire that can sink fangs into your enemies. Not only does he sport a fantastic array of attacks, but having another Vampire also benefits you with more magical support. Not only that, his inbuilt Command Ability helps keep your Wight King and Vampire Lord alive.

Adding all that together, the army sits at 980 points, and it didn't take too many products to make. I've kept this starting army fairly open minded, able to fit into any of the five dynasties that make up the Soulblight Gravelords faction with no issues. However you can begin your army more fitted toward one of these five if you wish. Perhaps a Dire Wolf inspired force, led by Radukar the Beast for Vyrkos, or an Avengorii monster army filled with Zombie Dragons and Terrorgheists. Or you can do something more classical and pick up some Blood Knights for a Kastelai Cavalry. The options are quite limitless with the Soulblight Gravelords.
